              Your Face Is YOU!

“The face contains the organs of sight, smell and food intake and is an outlet for expression of human emotions. It is ‘man’s presentation to the world.’ The face distinguishes each human being and is a major source of identity as it is often adorned and decorated, and in all but a few cultures, is nakedly exposed socially. The face expresses the mood and is a strong component of ‘body language’ as well as housing parts of the mechanism of speech for verbal communication. The lips and oral cavity are employed for the display of love and affection. The teeth, jaws, and face are highly personal and sensitive parts of the human anatomy from birth to senility. It is no small wonder, therefore, that dentistry, speech pathology, and the cosmetic industry constitute a force to rival the whole field of medicine and the rest of the health services.”

              Let’s Create Your Perfect Smile

Your smile impacts every part of your life, yet what are the building blocks of a beautiful smile? Dr. Avila knows because he has over 20 years of experience creating beautiful smiles!

A beautiful smile is more than being able to scan your teeth and have a computer decide where to place them. It begins with being able to describe the problems your teeth have and knowing how to correct those problems. How does your upper jaw fit into your skull? Is your jaw further forward than it should be? Is your upper jaw thinner than it should be? Is your upper jaw down from where it should be? What would your upper jaw look like if it were expanded? Would it function better? Would it look better? Would it last longer?

These are all things Dr. Avila analyzes. He has spent hours learning positions, sizes, locations, tilts, torques, rotations – and years understanding how everything best fits together.

              This Is Your Moment

Orthodontics is not all about Dr. Avila. It is all about YOU!

You have an investment in your orthodontic treatment as well and have to be committed – committed to brushing your teeth, wearing your rubber bands, and eventually wearing your retainers.

Your teeth and smile are meant to last your lifetime. And when they do, it is YOUR ACHIEVEMENT!

              Extra Visits

You'll Love to know that true orthodontic emergencies are rare! Broken brackets or attachments, pokey wires, loose retainers, and ill-fitting aligners are aggravating, but the great news is that these issues are often not emergencies and can be addressed during normal business hours. As a general rule, you should call our office if you experience severe pain, swelling, or bleeding.

Many minor issues can be solved by adults with easy at-home techniques. Then, text or call our office at (765) 282-3200 to schedule an appointment to address the issue.

              General Soreness

general-sorenessSome soreness is normal during orthodontic tooth movement whether you're being treated with Invisalign® or braces. For the first 3 to 5 days, or even more, patients should stick to a soft diet with chewier foods cut into small pieces. Irritated gums and other sore spots can be relieved by swishing with a warm salt water rinse by dissolving one teaspoonful of salt in eight ounces of warm water. If the tenderness is severe, consider over-the-counter pain medication taken for general aches and pains. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is preferred over Aspirin, Ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil) and Naproxen Sodium (Aleve) as research shows the latter can actually slow tooth movement.

              Loose Retainer or Aligner

loose-applianceIf there is no danger of swallowing any part of the appliance, continue wearing it to prevent any relapse. We'll be able to evaluate and address the issue at your next appointment.

              Loose Bracket or Band

loose-bracketLoose brackets or bands still secured to the wire can be left in place. Apply soft wax for comfort, if needed. If the bracket or band can be easily removed, place it in a plastic bag and bring it to your next appointment.

              Loose or Pokey Wire

loose-wireAs teeth move, it is not uncommon for the wire to "grow" towards the back teeth. Simply placing soft wax on the pokey end is usually sufficient. However, if the end of the wire is long enough, visible, and accessible, adults may choose to safely clip the long pokey end with a nail clipper being careful that the clipped piece is not swallowed. If the wire comes out of one or more of the brackets altogether, use tweezers or needle-nosed poking-wirepliers to insert the wire back into place, or a pencil eraser to bend the wire into a more comfortable position.
